Many a fan of Andre Agassi before reading this autobiography admired his tenacity on the tennis court and his ability to relate to the crowd. Some autobiographies written by sportspeople have shown themselves to be self-absorbed and unpleasant, therefore, one may be hesitant about reading another Autobiography.

Well read and admired by a few of Canterbury Tales Bookshop readers, one offered the opinion he was so pleased to have read it and was going to keep it but would rather others had the same pleasure as him.

From the very first page of this book, Andre mixes shot and tactical descriptions of particular games with his feelings before, during and after the matches, we get a glimpse of the thoughts that go through this elite player’s mind.

Andre’s personal life is a bitter battle within himself, as a child, his hate tennis as his father made him practise for long drueling hours every day, always willing him to become better,  academic education was seen as secondary and Andre finished his formal schooling at Year 9 As a young teenager, he was sent away from his home and family to a top tennis academy, he felt loneliness and anger towards his family, & although he was becoming a great tennis player, he derived no joy from the game.
His adult life was one of growth, as he found mentors and friends who he could trust, gradually he found happiness and meaning in his life and has a desire to use his celebrity status to share this with others.

He has used much of his career prize and endorsement money to set up a charter school in his home town of Las Vegas.

This book was a well-written, enjoyable and uplifting read. I would highly recommend it.
